Plus size t-shirts in India
In India, plus-size men's t-shirts run from 2XL (a 45–47″ chest) to 7XL (60–63″), though most brands stop at 2XL or 3XL. The size that matters is your chest girth, not the letter: India's own standard, INDIAsize, designates a man's size by chest girth in centimetres. Measure your chest, buy to that number, and check the shoulder seam sits on your shoulder — that one seam is what separates a t-shirt cut for your build from a medium scaled up.
The quick answer, by size
| Size | IND (cm) | Your chest | Your waist |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2XL | 117 | 45–47″ | 42–44″ |
| 3XL | 125 | 48–50″ | 45–47″ |
| 4XL | 133 | 51–53″ | 48–50″ |
| 5XL | 141 | 54–56″ | 51–53″ |
| 6XL | 149 | 57–59″ | 54–56″ |
| 7XL | 157 | 60–63″ | 57–60″ |
These are body measurements — you with a tape around you, not a garment laid flat. A t-shirt cut to fit a 47″ chest is itself wider than 47″; the difference is the ease the pattern is drawn with, which is six to seven inches through the chest on a relaxed cotton tee.
Why most plus-size t-shirts look wrong
Most Indian plus-size clothing is a medium pattern scaled up, which widens a garment without re-drawing it: the shoulder seam slides down the arm, the body clings through the stomach and the hem drops past the hip.
The cause is grading. A size chart can be produced by taking one base pattern — usually a medium — and scaling every measurement up by a fixed step. It is fast and it is cheap, and it fails at the top of the range for three reasons:
- The shoulder travels. Shoulder width grows with the scale, but a bigger man's shoulders are not proportionally wider than his chest. The seam ends up an inch or two down the arm, which reads instantly as ill-fitting however good the fabric is.
- The length outruns the torso. Body length is scaled at the same rate as width, so a 6XL is far longer than a 6XL torso needs. The hem lands on the thigh, which shortens the leg and widens the whole silhouette.
- The fabric has nowhere to go. Width is added evenly all round rather than where the body actually takes up room, so the cloth clings through the stomach and hangs loose at the sides.
What to look for instead
1. The shoulder seam
It should sit on your shoulder point — the bony corner where your shoulder meets your arm. This is the single fastest check, and you can do it in a mirror in two seconds.
2. A straight fall from chest to hip
Hold the hem and look at the side profile. The front should drop straight from the chest and skim the stomach. If the fabric is pulled in under the chest and pushed out again, the garment is too narrow through the middle.
3. Where the hem ends
At the hip, covering the waistband — including when you sit down, which is when most t-shirts ride up and expose the waistband. Past the hip and the proportions go wrong.
4. Weight of the cloth
Light jersey drapes onto the body and shows everything under it. Something in the 240–260 GSM range holds its own shape and bridges the body instead of mapping it. GSM is grams per square metre, and most Indian fast-fashion tees sit nearer 140–180.
5. The neck
A flat ribbed neck keeps its shape through washing. A thin rolled neck goes wavy, and a wavy neckline is the clearest signal of a cheap t-shirt there is.
How Indian sizing actually works
Sizes follow INDIAsize, the national sizing survey run by the Textiles Committee under India's Ministry of Textiles, which measured over 25,000 Indians and designates a man's size by his chest girth in centimetres. The published men's chart stops at 113 cm, below this range, so 2XL to 7XL continue it on the standard's own grade rule of 4 cm a step with the waist 7 cm under the chest.
This matters when shopping because two Indian brands can both print "3XL" on a label and be three inches apart. A chart in inches, of the body rather than the garment, is the only thing worth comparing across brands.
How to measure yourself
- Stand relaxed. Do not hold your breath or puff your chest out — you will buy a t-shirt that only fits while you are concentrating.
- Wrap a tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms, level front and back.
- Let it sit against you without pulling it tight. Read the number.
- Measure your waist where your trousers actually sit.
- Between two sizes, take the bigger one.
Measure yourself rather than a t-shirt you own: a worn t-shirt has stretched, and you would be buying a copy of something that already does not fit.
Where Monday Theory fits
Monday Theory is an Indian menswear label that cuts tops — t-shirts, polos and quarter-zips — only in plus sizes, 2XL to 7XL (chest 45 to 63 inches). Every Monday Theory pattern is drawn at size, not graded up from a smaller one, with room through the chest so the fabric bridges the body instead of clinging to it, a straight fall from chest to hip, and a hem that ends at the hip so it still covers the waistband when seated.
Every piece is ₹1,199, with free delivery, free size exchanges and 7-day free returns anywhere in India. Designed and made in India.
Monday Theory has not launched. The collection is published so people can say which designs they want made first; choosing a piece joins a waitlist rather than placing an order. There are no customer reviews or ratings on this site for the same reason — nothing has shipped yet, so there is nothing honest to show.
Questions
What size is a 50-inch chest in Indian plus sizes?
A 50-inch chest is a 3XL on this chart, which is IND 125 under India's own standard — the designation is the chest girth in centimetres. Indian sizing is not consistent between brands, so measure your chest and buy to the number rather than to the letter.
What is the largest t-shirt size available in India?
Most Indian brands stop at 2XL or 3XL. Big-and-tall ranges usually reach 5XL. Monday Theory cuts every piece to 7XL, a 63-inch chest.
Why do plus-size t-shirts look boxy?
Because most of them are a medium pattern scaled up. Scaling widens every measurement at once, so the shoulder seam slides down the arm and the body gains width it does not need while the length grows faster than the torso does. A pattern drawn at the size instead keeps the shoulder on the shoulder and the hem at the hip.
How should a t-shirt fit a big man?
The shoulder seam should sit on the shoulder point, not on the upper arm. The fabric should bridge the chest and stomach rather than cling to them. The hem should end at the hip, covering the waistband when seated, and no lower — length past the hip shortens the leg and makes the whole body read wider.
How do I measure my chest for a t-shirt?
Wrap a tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms, with the tape level front and back. Do not pull it tight and do not hold your breath. Measure your waist where your trousers actually sit. Measure yourself, not a t-shirt you already own — a worn t-shirt has stretched.
Are plus-size clothes in India sized differently from US or UK sizes?
Yes. India publishes its own standard body measurements through INDIAsize, a national survey of over 25,000 Indians run by the Textiles Committee under the Ministry of Textiles, and it designates a size by chest girth in centimetres rather than by a letter. Many Indian brands still use relabelled US charts, which is why the same letter varies by several inches between labels.
